Just wanted to welcome everyone back to school. The first day went great!

I have extended the book order due date to Tuesday, September 14. Our class activation code is GPBBQ. There are 3 books for $1 each: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Courdory, and David Goes to School (Chicka Chicka and David goes to school are among the favorites of my preschoolers!) This week, we're starting the alphabet. The kids will be bringing home a letter Aa booklet on Monday and Tuesday. Similar booklets will be coming home each Monday and Tuesday throughout this school year. I recommend saving the booklets so your child can look at them and refer to them as the year goes on.

Also, my phone line has been damaged somehow. I have opened a repair ticket and it should be up and running by Monday evening. If you need to contact me, please call my cell phone.

I wanted to quickly share a couple dates with you so you can mark your calendars.
Preschool Meet and Greet is September 1 and 2 depending on your child's class day (an invitation will be arriving soon with more details)
First day of school is September 8 and 9. The only thing your child needs to start school is a full sized backpack.
I have also updated the calendar for the year so you can note days off and things like that. Please do not print yet, as I'm still making adjustments.

PICNIC

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up:
As you know, our picnic is scheduled for tomorrow at 11:30. If the weather is chilly and windy like it is today, we will do McDonald's instead of the park. So, if you go outside tomorrow and it's chilly, head to the golden arches. If the weather is nice and warm, we'll go to the park.

Print Your May Calendar

OK- the May calendar is FINALLY ready to print. Thanks for your patience on that!
There is so much going on in may. Please print out BOTH the calendar and this post so that you can have all the details about each event, right at your finger tips.

The first thing on our list is the What's in the Box? Guess and then tell- show and tell. You should have received an email or a hot pink note in your child's backpack about this fun activity. If for some reason you did not, please refer to this post for more information. We're doing this MONDAY AND TUESDAY of THIS WEEK!!! To clarify, that's May 3 and 4. This is our LAST show and tell for the year.

Second: We have a picnic on Friday, May 21 at Hunter Park*. Hunter park is located at 3500 S. 6000 W. We will meet at 11:30 on the West side by the playground. Bring a lunch for you and your little one, a blanket or chair to sit on, sunscreen, and camera. I will provide a treat for the kids after their lunch.
*In case of bad weather, we will meet at McDonald's on 8400 W. and 3500 S. Unfortunately, I will not be able to provide a treat if we have to go there and you will need to purchase a lunch from McDonald's; as they do not allow outside food or drink. (so keep your fingers crossed for good weather!)
Third: Your child brought home a CD a few weeks ago with songs that we will be singing for our end of year program. Please play that every chance you get so that your child will be ready for our performance!
Speaking of performance, the Fourth item on the agenda: Our end of year program is on Tuesday, May 25 at Hunter Library. Hunter Library is located at 4740 W. 4100 S. The Monday / Wednesday classes will perform at 11:30 (both am and pm). The Tuesday / Thursday class will perform at 1:00. Please be prepared to stand and give a very short (30 sec-1 min) I'm so proud of_____ because speech. Be sure to include how much they've learned and grown through the year.
Fifth: We're celebrating May AND summer birthdays this month. Mylee, Hilary, Jackson, Kody, Ainzleigh, Dominic and Kade- all turn 4!!! Kyle and Ellie turn 5!!! Happy Happy birthday guys!
Lastly: Open enrollment has begun for preschool next year. Word of mouth is the GREATEST compliment you can give!

May calendar is coming...soon

The May calendar is ALMOST ready to print. I need to get a couple of things finalized before it's ready. Hopefully, everything will be set by the end of the day today. Thanks for your patience.

Also, I sent a note home or an email (depending on your child's class) explaining our What's in the box? Guess and then tell Show and tell. Whew- that's a long name!! Anyway, just in case you didn't check your email or the note got lost, here's what we're doing: (you may wish to print out the note if for some reason you didn't get it)The secret show and tell does not have to begin with the letter "x" and the word doesn't need to contain the letter "x". We will be focusing on the BOX itself. You could include ANYTHING inside the box. A favorite toy, a favorite snack, picture of something you like to do, something you think is funny or gross or something you don't like at all...ANYTHING!!!! Remember, the item does not need to have anything to do with the letter x.

Picture Day Reminder and slight change of plans

Next week, on Wednesday and Thursday, it's picture day! We are going to have our picture taken during the regular school day, but there has been a slight change in plans. Rather than taking the pictures in my home, we will be walking over to the town home club house with a much larger area for picture-taking. It's a short distance to the west of my home, with sidewalks or paved trails the whole way. Also, each class will have a parent helper to make sure we all get there safe and sound.
*You may want to bring a water bottle with your child's name on it just in case he/she gets thirsty.
*Package prices will be coming home in backpacks on Wednesday and Thursday.
*I will have a sample individual portrait on my door for you to look at.

Program CDs

By the end of class Monday, your child should have received a CD with all of the songs we will be performing at our end of year program on Tuesday May 25 (click the date on the calendar for more details). There are even a few "bonus tracks" for learning the alphabet, shapes and writing numbers. We have sung the majority of these songs throughout the school year, but there are a couple of new ones in there too.
Please play this CD like crazy! Put it on your mp3 player, play it in the car. Do you have an old portable CD player with headphones? Put it in there and let your little one listen to it.
If for some reason your child didn't get one or you have a faulty one, let me know. I can easily make you another.Thanks so much!!

Movie Star Day and Helpers

MOVIE STAR DAY IS THIS WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. Kids can dress up like a movie star if they wish. This is also the day I'll be making our movie for graduation. Please make sure your child is here. I want everyone in our movie!

April Calendar is ready for printing

The April calendar is ready for printing. Just click on the print icon on the upper right hand corner of the calendar. Once you are in the print screen, you can choose the size of font it's printed in, the color, and if you want it to print as a portrait or landscape. PLEASE print it up and hang it in a visible place. Helpful tip: print this post on the back side of the calendar. This way you will have all the details about each happening.

Here are the highlights of this month:

April 21 and 22 is movie star day. The kids can come to school dressed up like a movie star if they would like to. (fancy dresses, feather boas, high heels, top hats, bow ties, sunglasses, super man capes, etc) I will need a mommy (or daddy or grandparent) helper on this day in each class. (this is the day I film the kids for our preschool video, so please please please make sure your child is at school this day)

April 28 and 29 is school picture day. Based on the poll on this site a couple of weeks ago, the majority of you would like group style pictures, so that's what we'll do! The pictures will be taken inside, during preschool, against a BLACK backdrop. Bright colors always look best in photos. It is recommended that you do not put your child in black. (with the black background, it may look like a floating head :) ) You will have the option to purchase an individual photo of your child or a class picture OR a combination of both.

We will celebrate Kanamu's birthday this month. He will be 5! Happy birthday!!

I will be sending a note home in the backpacks this week about Summer Camp. The first day of summer classes will be Monday, June 7. Tuition is $60. There are no additional registration or start up costs.

May 3 &4 is our Mystery Box show and tell. It's also the LAST show and tell of the year.

May 24 is the picnic at Hunter Park

Yearbook or Group Style

This is the yearbook style picture:
The nice thing about this style of photo is that everyone gets a perfect photo.

Group style picture:

The plus about this style, is that personalities really come through with the whole group together.

Whether you guys decide to go with the group style OR the yearbook style, there will be package options. You will be able to order an individual shot as well as a group photo or a combination of the two. (individuals will not be against a white background this year.)

Next week is our field trip on Wednesday, March 31. Please sign up for 10:00 or 11:30.
Spring break begins on Thursday, April 1. We will return to school on Monday and Tuesday April 12 and 13.
Also, remember that tuition is due on April 1. In order to avoid late fees, your tuition must reach me BY April 5. We are not in school those days. You are welcome to write a check now with a post date for some time between the 1st and 5th day if you would like.

Last night I went to Costco (West Valley) and they had the Leap Frog Letter Factory DVD for 6.89! That is such a good deal!! In addition to the letter Factory, they also had a "Let's Go to School" and "Math Adventure to the Moon". (I have not watched the second two movies, but I did pick those up for $6.89 as well)

March calendar

Here are the highlights of the month:

We have 2 birthdays. Tess and Caitlyn. Happy birthday girls!!

March has 10 sessions. Rather than taking a break this month, we will count the last week of March as part of our April sessions. That way we can have a long spring break!

Don't forget, tuition is due March 1. It is late March 6. Late fees will be enforced.

Open enrollment for preschool begins on March 5. Word of mouth is the best compliment you could give!

On March 31, we are going on a field trip to 42nd Street Greenhouse (4221 S. 700 E. behind the red brick house) We will go in two separate groups/ times. Please choose 10:00 or 11:30 am. I will put a sign up sheet on the door the week before. Note: This field trip will take the place of classes on both Wednesday and Thursday.

Remember: April's tuition is due on the 1st, but we do not have school that day. Please either post date your check or make arrangements to drop it by or mail it so that it reaches me before the 6th.

Spring break is from April 1- 10.

Today during show and tell, Asia was telling us about going to the doctor. I asked her "What's your doctor's name?" She replied "Dr. Ancovenants".

At the end of class today, we played Simon Says while we waited for the parents to come. Kyle was the Simon. He said "Simon says sit down on the floor". So, we did. Then he sat there for a minute thinking. Finally he said "Simon s... no wait a minute, I'm going to do it without the Simon says".

A couple of weeks ago, Kanamu and Stone were talking about how strong they are. Kanamu said "I'm really strong!" Stone replied "Well, I'm really strong. I have seriously been workin' out!"

About a month ago, the class was being a bit noisy. I had reminded them a couple different times that it was my turn to talk. Kyle raised his hand and said "Teacher, sometimes I can't go quiet."

Current Student and Sibling Enrollment

Current Student and sibling enrollment has begun. Returning students who enroll before March 5 will have a discounted registration fee of $20. On March 5, the fee goes back to $30, and I will begin open enrollment.
Wednesday-Friday I will be sending home the registration forms in an envelope in your child's backpack. If for some reason you do not receive yours, please let me know. I would be happy to give you another.

This week we are talking about growing and changing. Thursday and Friday you will need to bring a current picture and a baby picture to school. We are using them for an art project and they will not come home in favorable condition. Photo copies will work just fine. See above for example.

Also, Thursday, the pm class will have class to make up for Monday's holiday.
Friday, the Monday Wednesday morning class will have their make up for Monday.

February calendar

The February calendar is ready for printing.

Here are some highlights:

February 1 is our field trip to the Museum of Natural History. We'll meet in the lobby at 10:30. You can stay for as little or as long as you would like. Siblings are OK. This is a free field trip, however, parking is no longer free. You can park in the Rice Eccles Stadium North entrance for $5. You can also take TRAX. Please click the link for more details about directions and parking.

Tuition is due on February 1, which is our field trip. I would prefer not to collect money at the field trip, so please either post-date a check with Feb 1 as the date and give it to me in class next time, or pay on February 3 and 4. *note: tuition will be late if it's paid after the 3rd or 4th (depending on your class' day) and will require a $10 late fee.

February 10 and 11 are the Valentine's parties. We will celebrate by playing games, making an edible craft, and passing out valentines to all of our friends at school. *We will make the holder in class. *Please fill out the FROM only portion of the valentine.

Monday/ Wednesday am class 7 valentines

Monday/ Wednesday pm class has 10 valentines

Tuesday/ Thursday class has 11 valentines

Please bring enough valentines so that the kids give ONE TO THEMSELVES and then one to each of the other children in the class. Bringing enough valentines for everyone including your own child will eliminate much confusion and tears.

February 15 is President's Day. There is no school. Monday /Wednesday am class will make up their day on Friday (19th) during regular class time. Monday / Wednesday pm class will make up their day on Thursday (18th) during their regular class time.

February 18 and 19. Please have your child bring a baby picture and a more current picture to school (a photocopy is fine). These photos will NOT be returned in favorable condition. We will be doing an art project that will look something like this:

February 24 and 25 is PJ day. That's right. The kids get to wear their pajamas to school that day!

December Calendar

The December calendar is ready for printing. Remember, it's a short month, so tuition is $50.

Your child will be bringing home a Christmas Program CD this week. Please put it in the cd player as much as you can for the next 3 weeks so that your child can practice practice practice for our program.

**I am in need of empty toilet paper or paper towel tubes for an art project the week of the 7th. If you've got an empty roll lying around, please send it to school this week!!**

Here are some of this month's highlights:

Our Christmas parties will be on Wednesday, December 16 and Friday, December 18 for Tuesday/ Thursday class. The children will draw names at school for their "secret friend". They should bring a new, wrapped gift, valued at about $2 for a gift exchange that day. Please attach a To/From note or tag so that we know who to thank. Look for a note with the secret friend's name on it, on December 7 or 8, depending upon class day.
Thursday, December 17 is our field trip/ program for all classes. We will be performing for Legacy Senior Center located at 6302 S. Gold Medal Dr. (just east of Bangerter Highway). The children should wear their holiday best for this occasion. We will meet at the center at about 10:50 so that we can get in our places and begin on time. The program will last until about 11:30. Please note that the main purpose of the program is to provide a fun activity for the people who reside there, so parents should sit to the back of the room allowing the residents the "best seats in the house".
Arianna will celebrate her birthday this month. Happy birthday Arianna!

Mark your calendars

The field trip date for November has been set. We will be going to Sweet Candy company on Thursday, November 12. There are two field trip times: 9am and 11am. Please sign up for the one you would like. You may do so in an email, over the phone, on the note that will be posted on the door a few days before the field trip, or by commenting on this post.

Sweet's has specific guidelines for us to follow while we are on our tour. Some of these include: no jewelery (including wedding rings), cameras and purses must be left in cars or checked in at front desk, everyone must wear a hair net, etc. Please click here for tour guidelines.

The week of November 9-13 is a THREE day school week for all classes. All kids who normally meet on Thursday, will meet on Friday instead.

One last thing about this particular field trip. Each time slot has room for 30 people (one student, and one adult). Unfortunately, siblings will not be able to attend this tour.

November Calendar

The November Calendar is ready. (you may wish to come back to print it at the beginning of November, that way the field trip date will be set)

Here are of the highlights:

Tentative field trip on Friday, November 13. The other possible date is Thursday the 12. If the field trip happens on the 12th, Thursday's preschool class will be held on Friday during the regular time block.

November 23 and 24 will be our Thanksgiving Feast. Bring one food that you are thankful for to share with your friends (individual portions are NOT neaded. I will be serving the food buffet style)

No school November 25 and 26

The Monday Wednesday class has 9 sessions of school in November. To even things up for all classes, I have made November 30 count as a December class.

Heads up:

December tuition is $50 (we have just 7 sessions of school)
December 17 we will have a performance for the Legacy Senior Center. Click that date on the December calendar for more details.

Misc. Updates

New: Look for homework in your child's backpack every Monday or Tuesday. All children who bring their completed homework back to school on Wednesday or Thursday, will get a prize!
Remember: EVERY Monday and Tuesday is show and Tell. Please help your child select something interesting -that is NOT a toy- to bring to school to share with the class.

October Book Suggestions

This month's book suggestions are:
In Firefly: #83 The Wind Blew - total classic. and #74 Ten Fat Turkeys- goofy and fun counting book complete with death defying (not really) stunts done by turkeys!
In Seesaw: #8 Can You See What I See? On a Scary Night - very cool pictures...slightly spooky! My 8 year old loves it! and #20 Goodnight Goon -I haven't read this one, but it looks so funny! Amazon gave it really good reviews. I'm definitely getting it!
In Honeybee: (this one is just packed with super-great books!) You have to have #36 Knuffle Bunny (pronounced with the K sound). I'm pretty sure that this one is my #1 favorite kids' book of all time. I absolutely love it!!! (and so does my husband and kids) #25 Goodnight Moon- another classic. #24 Go Away Big Green Monster- very silly. Cut out pages that make a not so scary monster. There are many other great reads. Be sure to look this one over carefully so that you don't miss anything!!

Fire Station

Just a couple things about the calendar:

I use the Sunday column to add the weekly theme and letter. There are no activities for preschool that occur on the weekends.
If you click on an "event" in the calendar, you can get a more detailed description about that activity.
You can print the calendar by clicking on the printer icon located on the yellow bar that runs across the top of the calendar.
In the pop-up printer window, you will be able to customize the font size, color and orientation of the calendar

#41 If You Give a...Pack. All the Laura Numeroff books in this series are so fun! This set is great because it has Moose a Muffin, Pig a Pancake and Mouse to School! Very fun reads!
#22 Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. This is a favorite for my students! They love telling the pigeon "NO!"
#32 The Hiccupotamus. A bad case of the hiccups and goofy words make this book a must-have-umous!

In Firefly I like:
#43 Llama Llama Red Pajama. It's only $1 and it's a cute read!
#51 Pinkalicious and Puplicious Pair is a must have for little girls.
#27 Halloween Fun Pack. It contains 3 books. Room on a Broom, which is my absolute favorite Halloween book! Spooky Hour is fun too. But, I'll admit I've never read The Best Halloween Hunt Ever

In SeeSaw I like:
#49 If I Built a Car (I haven't actually read this one, but a teacher/friend of mine says her preschooler and first grader love it. It's their favorite book right now!)
#29 David Duo both are must haves for EVERY child's library
#22 Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Pack - the book is OK by itself, but with the DVD, it is awesome! I haven't had a class yet, who didn't like to watch it, and the kids absolutely LOVE the song!
For the budding scientist, I really like #79 Science Vocabulary Readers Mega Library. I love them because they keep the children's attention, they have real photos, and they have very interesting facts. You might even learn something when you read them!

August Happenings

Tuition is $30 this month because we have just 4 sessions of preschool.
Our End of Summer party will be on Thursday, August 13 from 10:00-11:30. We are having a water party, so bring your child to school lathered in sunscreen, wearing a swimsuit and shoes that can get wet! We are going to slip and slide, run through the sprinklers, eat Popsicles and have a great time outdoors!

Coming next month:

*Preschool Open house will be on Wednesday, September 2. (I'll be sending post cards out in a couple weeks.)

*First day of school will be September 9 or 10 depending on your child's class.

**The only thing your child will need for school is a backpack or bag that can fit a full sized sheet of paper in it without being folded.

2009-2010 school Calendar

*Please take a glance at this year's days off and possible field trip dates so that you can have them in the back of your mind. This is a tentative schedule, so do not print anything yet. I will update themes, letters, field trip info, and any other pertinent information on a monthly basis.

I like to let you know when I find something worth sharing! while shopping at Kohl's this week, I found that they had three great books for $5 each (all are hardcover). One of my favorites to read to the class is What do you do with a tail like this! It's a great book about crazy animals and what they used different parts of their bodies for. For example, did you know that a cricket's ears are in it's knees? Anyway, the kids ewe and awe when I read it!

The kids have been cracking me up lately!

One boy was showing his show and tell the other day, and he pulled out two different toys. The kids were in awe. He boasted "Yeah, I have a lots of toys" and of course the kids were saying they did too, but his reply was this. "I have ten thousand, eight hundred, ten thousand, eight hundred, ten thousand, eight hundred, ten thousand, eight hundred, ten thousand eight hundred." I think he wanted to get the point across that he had many many toys!

Yesterday, a little girl was sitting at the desk working on her paper. She was telling someone "I'm gonna be the hottest girl in the talent show!"

Another little girl was done with her work. She seemed to be pondering something. All of the sudden she says "Teacher, I think when I get home I'm gonna eat a pear!" I said "you're going to eat a pear?" She said "yeah, they make me go craaaazzy!"

"Teacher, that scared me out of death!"

I always tell the kids they are "rockin' my world" if they are doing something exceptionally well. One kid always asks me "Teacher, am I rockin' your world?"

First Day of School

I thought you might me curious to know how the first day of school went. I think all classes went great! Today (and yesterday) for the most part, we just worked on the right way to be in preschool.

Here are some key phrases we use during school. Ask your child if they can show you what they mean.

*Sit on your pockets:

(a nice way to say "sit on your fanny" with your bottom flat on the floor)

*Criss-cross-applesauce and hugs with your arms: (Katie has her arms folded, her eyes on the teacher, and her legs are criss-crossed)

*Marshmallow cheeks: (Taylor is doing a perfect representation of marshmallow cheeks)

*Quiet Coyote:

(quiet coyotes always listen, never talk)

We are also working on raising our hands if we need to tell the teacher something:

(notice that Karlee and Lizzi are both raising their hands AND doing marshmallow cheeks.) Way to go girls!
